In Jan of 2025 there were 6 new codes that became effective, for fascial plane blocks. In addition, there were updates to already existing abdominal fascial plane blocks. Are staying compliant by selecting the proper codes for services performed?
What is new? Thoracic Fascial Block new codes:
- 64466-Thoracic fascial plane block, unilateral; by injection(s), including imaging guidance, when performed
- 64467- by continuous infusion(s), including imaging guidance, when performed
Bilateral:
- 64468- bilateral thoracic fascial plane block administered by injection(s)
- 64469-by continuous infusion(s), including imaging guidance, when performed
New codes for Lower Extremity Fascial block: unilateral
- 64473-Lower extremity fascial plane block, unilateral; by injection(s), including imaging guidance, when performed
- 64474- by continuous infusion(s), including imaging guidance, when performed
- Bilateral procedures- please bill with modifier 50
Important Notes:
- The new codes include imaging when performed together
- For ESP lumbar block- no specific code exists please use the code 64999
Updates to the current Abdominal codes – new descriptions: unilateral
- 64486
Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block (abdominal plane block, rectus sheath block) unilateral; by injection(s) (includes imaging guidance, when performed)* - 64487- by continuous infusion(s) (includes imaging guidance, when performed)*
Bilateral Andominal Fascial block codes: updated description
- 64488- Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block (abdominal plane block, rectus sheath block) bilateral; by injections (includes imaging guidance, when performed)*
- 64489-by continuous infusions (includes imaging guidance, when performed)*
Important note: the updated abdominal codes can also be used for coding quadratus lumborum block and external oblique intercostal plane block.
