The following codes for Tobacco Screening apply to all HealthChoice INN providers that are part of Community Care Behavioral Health Org (MCO PA).
What was approved n
by The PA The Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS):
- G codes (listed below) for Tobacco screening of patients 12 years and older.
- These services should be done at least yearly, preferably at intake step of the patient visit
- Additional visits are allowed if medically necessary
- The Tobacco Screening includes: electronic nicotine- ie. vapes; smokeless tobacco- ie. chewing tobacco; combustible tobacco- ie. cigarettes, cigars
Coding: any provider specialty
- G9902 Any
Patient screened for tobacco use AND
identified as a tobacco user - G9903 Any Patient screened for tobacco use AND
identified as a tobacco non-user - G9905 Any Patient not screened for tobacco use
Coding for specific provider type: 370- Tobacco Cessation Counseling provider
- G9906- Patient identified as a tobacco user received tobacco cessation intervention
during the measurement period or in the six months prior to the measurement
period (counseling and/or pharmacotherapy) - G9908- Patient identified as tobacco user did not
receive tobacco cessation intervention
during the measurement period or in the six months prior to the measurement
period (counseling and/or pharmacotherapy)
Billing/Rebursement:
- The tobacco screening G codes do not have a separate rebursement
- The codes cannot be billed by themselves on a separate claim
- The codes should be billed on a claim with other services that do have a reimbursements
- Providers need to append $0.01 to the tobacco screening code to ensure claim adjudication.
