Aetna: Commercial Plans-acupuncture standard benefit for 2022

According to Aetna, it will add acupuncture benefit as part of the standard benefit package for all renewing and new commercial AETNA plans.

The change will take effect in 2022, but there is no specific date is given.

Aetna states that providing this coverage gives you and our members more treatment options for chronic pain relief.

Medical Literature supports this kind of non drug treatment for reducing chronic pain, such as low-back pain, neck pain and osteoarthritis (knee) pain. * It may also help reduce tension headaches and prevent migraines.*

The American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians both endorse acupuncture as a nondrug approach for patients who have chronic low-back pain who do not respond to self-care. *

*National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Acupuncture: in depth. January 2016. Accessed October 7, 2021
